As you may or may not know, Yahoo Small Business offers hosting. But before you decide to use them, I just want to tell you a little story. And this story might have an effect on whether or not you want to go with Yahoo Small Business.
So our church web site has been with various webhosting services over the years. I have been taking care of maintaining the site through a couple of hosting providers. The choice on who to go with was always handled by someone other than myself. Well a few years ago, the decision was made to go with Yahoo Small Business. And everything seemed to be going fine until just this past weekend of Jan 27th, 2012.
The previous week we had a meeting with the pastor talking about a re-design of the site. We talked about a few options and settled on a Word Press platform which we think is going to be the best way to go. So for the first week we were just looking for a good template to use. We found some we wanted to take a look at. And this is where it gets interesting.
I went ahead and installed word press through our Yahoo Small Business account. The first couple of days things seemed to be going pretty good as we tested some of the themes we had looked at and we settled on one of the Word Press generic themes for now. Then we started to create our pages, work with the menu system, and add some content. This is when we noticed we were getting “Error Establishing Data Base Connection” messages. We were able to refresh the page and continue. At least for a while. Then it just totally went away.
You might imagine how happy I was at that point. I tried to repair the data base but to no avail. So, then the call to Yahoo Small Business to find out what they could do They told me that they were having issues with the servers that held the MySql data base and that it was affecting everyone who was using Yahoo Small Business with MySql and that it could be as long as the next Friday before they got it fixed. They were guessing it would probably be fixed by Wednesday.
The first thing that came to my mind was ‘Why did they not have a mirrored server ready to switch over. I mean an outfit as big as Yahoo Small Business, you would think would have that kind of backup in place.
To make a long story short, they were able to get things up by Thursday Feb 2nd. At least most of the time. I am still seeing ‘Error Connecting To Database’ messages occasionally. But at least Yahoo Small Business has it up and we can continue on.
Will we be staying with Yahoo Small Business? The jury is still out on that. I will be talking with the pastor and letting him know what we went through. As far as your decision to go with Yahoo Small Business, I will leave that up to you.
I am also wondering if anyone else has had any issues with Yahoo Small Business good or bad. So feel free to leave a comment if you would like to.
As a side note, I do not use Yahoo Small Business personally. I use a different hosting company for my hosting needs. They provide me with unlimited hosting and also a way to get paid for letting others know about their service. Click here to find out more about them.
